The Downland Lunch Club

History

The Downland Lunch Club was formed in early 1998, and was the result of several months of planning, meetings and discussion between,' The Community Council for Berkshire (C.C.B.), the Churches, and The Downland Volunteer Group.

Aims

The aim of the project was to allow Downland Village residents who find it difficult to get out and about, to meet up with old friends and to perhaps make some new ones, whilst enjoying a freshly cooked meal.

The first lunch was held in May 1998 and was attended by eighteen diners. They sat down to Cottage Pie and vegetables, Fruit Flan, Tea or Coffee, and Mints all served at the table by a band of willing helpers.

Since then the Lunch Club has thrived, and is now regularly attended by some thirty plus diners, many of whom were at the first lunch. Although the greatest attendance is from Compton, people also travel from Beedon, Cold Ash, Curridge, Hampstead Norreys, Hermitage, Peasemore and Yattendon.

Christmas is a great occasion. A traditional lunch is served together with all the trimmings, wine, crackers, a raff1e, and presents for all.

Where and when is it held?

The Downland Lunch Club generally takes place on the last Friday of the month, with a break in August. It is held at Compton Village Hall, which is situated in Burrell Road, Compton. The cost of a two-course meal including tea or coffee is at present £2.50.
